Tesla’s second major recall of December (following more than 2 million cars being recalled for its Autopilot semi-autonomous driving system) may “only” affect some 120,500 vehicles, but its safety risk is no less important: Door locks may unlatch and open during a crash in certain Model S sedans and Model X SUVs.

The issue affects certain model-year 2021-23 Model S and Model X vehicles. Cabin doors can be unlocked during a crash, which may then unlatch and open, increasing the risk of injury.

Tesla has released an over-the-air software update. The automaker will begin notifying owners Feb. 17, 2024, but those with further questions in the meantime can call Tesla at 877-798-3752 (Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-23-00-009), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number a
