For 2024, the updated GMC Sierra 2500/3500 HDs start at $47,395, $7,700 higher than the light-duty Sierra 1500.
Buyers who tow expensive toys have money to spend on their rigs, and luxury tugs have led to an escalating war of opulence in the HD pickup arena. The Denali trim moves to second place in the Sierra HD’s hierarchy for the 2024 model year with the introduction of the new Denali Ultimate trim, available for both the 2500 and 3500 models.
The Denali Ultimate gets dark-chrome finish on the grille and exterior badging; the badging on the fenders also features detailing drawn from a topographic map of Mount Denali in Alaska. It rides on 20-inch wheels and includes standard power running boards and GMC’s six-way MultiPro Tailgate with an integrated Kicker audio system for showing off at tailgate parties.
Inside, the Denali Ultimate version of the truck named after the highest point in North America (20,310 feet) is wrapped in full-grain leather in a trim-exclusive shade called Alpine Umber. Like the fender badges, the paldao wood trim is etched with Denali topography. Massaging front seats, a 12-speaker Bose stereo, power moonroof, head-up display and synthetic suede headliner are also standard.
Powertrain Specs
A 6.6-liter gasoline V-8 engine is standard in the Sierra HD whether you opt for the 2500 or the more capable 3500. Generating 401 horsepower and 464 pounds-feet of torque, it’s paired with a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission. The optional 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 churns out 470 hp and 975 pounds-feet of torque and is partnered with the 10-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is available with both engines.
Since GMC doesn’t have to subject the Sierra HDs to EPA fuel-economy testing, it doesn’t. (Heavy-duty pickups are exempt from the testing requirements.) You can safely assume the trucks’ fuel economy is not great, though.
Standard and Available Safety Equipment
To keep this big truck from doing big damage to other vehicles, the 2024 GMC Sierra HDs’ standard safety features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, a following-distance indicator and automatic high beams. Newly available for 2024 is the Pro Safety Plus Package, which adds rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitors.
Availability and Pricing
The 2024 GMC Sierra HDs are on sale now. They’re available with a regular cab (two doors), double cab (short rear doors) and crew cab (full-size rear doors). They also come with either a 6-foot-9-inch short bed or an 8-foot long bed.
With either engine, 4WD costs $2,800; the AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate come with 4WD only. A power take-off for running jobsite equipment is available on 4WD Pro and SLE trucks for an extra cost. Long-bed Sierra 3500 HDs are also available in single-rear-wheel and dually configurations.
