The 2024 J.D. Power APEAL Study has revealed its findings on owner satisfaction across various automotive brands. The study, which stands for Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout, evaluates owner enthusiasm for their new vehicles. This year, Porsche and Mini have topped the lists in their respective categories.

Top Performers in 2024

Porsche has taken the top spot among premium brands and overall, while Mini has led the mass-market brands. In the premium category, Jaguar and Land Rover secured the second and third positions. For mass-market brands, RAM and Kia followed Mini in the rankings. The study gathered responses from 99,144 new vehicle owners who were surveyed 90 days after taking ownership. These responses rated vehicles across 37 attributes divided into 10 categories, ranging from comfort to performance satisfaction.

Key Findings

The APEAL Study not only provides a ranking of owner satisfaction but also offers insights into the automotive industry. Notably, the study found that emotional satisfaction is higher among non-Tesla electric vehicle owners compared to owners of gas and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Tesla scores higher among return customers, but its ratings from customers coming from other brands are less impressive. Increased range and improved interior materials are key drivers of EV owner satisfaction. Infotainment systems, however, have become an increasing source of frustration for owners.

Detailed Rankings

Among the premium brands, Porsche scored 891 points, followed by Jaguar with 886, and Land Rover with 882. Other notable mentions include BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lincoln. In the mass-market category, Mini led with 858 points, followed by RAM and Kia. Hyundai and GMC also performed well, with 846 and 845 points respectively.

The study also highlighted individual model performances. The BMW 7 Series was the highest-ranking model overall. The Kia K5 won its class for the fourth consecutive year, while other repeat winners included the BMW IX and X4, Genesis GV60, and Nissan Titan. Hyundai led in the number of models ranked highest in their respective categories, followed by BMW and Toyota.

Conclusion

The 2024 J.D. Power APEAL Study provides valuable insights into owner satisfaction and preferences, highlighting the brands and models that excel in meeting consumer expectations. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, these findings offer a roadmap for manufacturers aiming to improve their vehicles’ appeal and overall owner satisfaction.
