Land Rover Discontinues Steel Wheels

Land Rover enthusiasts might have noticed a significant change in the latest Defender models: the absence of steel wheels. Known for their durability and rugged appeal, steel wheels have now been discontinued. However, the good news is that Land Rover has introduced an innovative replacement that maintains the classic look but offers improved performance.

The Introduction of Type 9013 Aluminum Wheels

Replacing the 18-inch steel wheels, Land Rover has rolled out the Type 9013 20-inch aluminum wheels as part of the $5950 County Exterior Pack. These wheels are crafted to resemble steel wheels but come with the advantage of being significantly lighter. The County Exterior Pack not only includes the new wheels but also features a stylish two-tone white-and-tasman-blue paint scheme. It’s essential not to confuse this with the Country Pack, which is an entirely different offering.

The Advantages of Aluminum Over Steel

One of the primary reasons for the shift is the weight difference. Steel wheels, while robust, are considerably heavier than their aluminum counterparts. To quantify this, we asked Land Rover to weigh both options: the original 18-inch steel wheel and the new 20-inch Type 9013 aluminum wheel. The steel wheel weighed 39.85 pounds, whereas the aluminum version came in at 31.96 pounds. This eight-pound difference per wheel translates into a substantial improvement in vehicle dynamics, enhancing overall performance.

Aesthetic and Functional Appeal

In terms of aesthetics, the Type 9013 wheels mimic the steel wheel’s classic design, complete with white paint to maintain the traditional look. However, their lightweight construction contributes to better handling and efficiency. Land Rover’s approach ensures that the Defender retains its iconic appearance while benefiting from modern engineering advancements.

So, the next time you spot a Defender and admire its ‘steelies,’ remember that it’s likely the sophisticated Type 9013 aluminum wheel you’re looking at—designed to impress both in form and function.
