Introduction to the Alfa Romeo SZ Coupe

The Alfa Romeo SZ, a car that splits opinions right down the middle, is today’s highlight on Bring a Trailer. Depending on your perspective, the Alfa Romeo SZ is either postmodern cool or a hideous doorstop. When it debuted at the 1989 Geneva Auto Show, it stunned audiences with its brutal, futuristic design. This unique car continues to stir strong reactions, capturing the essence of bold automotive design.

Development and Design

Following Fiat’s acquisition of Alfa Romeo in 1986, Fiat’s CEO Vittorio Ghidella envisioned a limited-production sports car to rejuvenate Alfa’s sporting image. The resulting Alfa Romeo SZ was certainly provocative, but its radical design ensured that only 1036 units were produced. This 1991 model, currently up for auction, is number 993. Its development involved contributions from various designers, including Robert Opron from Fiat. Despite its unusual looks, the car achieved a drag coefficient of just 0.30, thanks to refined design efforts led by Antonio Castellana.

Mechanical Excellence

While its looks may be polarizing, the SZ’s mechanical setup has received nearly universal praise. Its chassis and most of the mechanical components were sourced from the Alfa 75. The 3.0-liter, 12-valve Busso V-6 engine was boosted to 210 horsepower, equipped with special height-adjustable Koni dampers and other unique tweaks. As a result, the SZ is known for its beautifully balanced handling and sonorous engine that enthusiasts love.

A Cult Classic up for Auction

This particular Alfa Romeo SZ, imported from Canada earlier this year, has only 13,000 km (8100 miles) on the clock, making it one of the cleanest, lowest-mileage SZs in existence. Its recent maintenance, including a new timing belt, clutch, and engine mounts, makes it an excellent choice for collectors who appreciate its unique blend of avant-garde design and mechanical robustness. The auction for this exceptional example ends on August 6, offering a rare opportunity for those who dare to be different to own an unusual slice of automotive history.
