Overview of the Recall

BMW has announced a recall affecting 12,535 Mini Cooper SE electric models due to potential faults in their battery systems. The recall specifically targets vehicles whose batteries were produced in a manner that may fall outside standard production specifications, posing a risk of overheating or fire.

Reason for the Recall

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected Mini Cooper SE models may experience faults within their high-voltage battery systems, potentially leading to overheating issues. This risk is present even when the vehicle is parked and not in use. The recall concerns vehicles produced between the 2020 and 2024 model years.

Recall Solution and Next Steps

To address the problem, BMW will install a software update at authorized dealerships. This update includes a diagnostic function that can detect malfunctions in the high-voltage system and automatically discharges the battery to a safer, below 30 percent state-of-charge emergency mode.

Owner Notification and Instructions

Dealers were notified of the issue in mid-August, with plans to inform vehicle owners on October 7. Impacted owners will receive instructions to schedule an appointment with their authorized dealer for a free software update. Owners can also check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is affected. Any battery issues occurring before the recall will be covered under the Mini new vehicle limited warranty program.
