Overview of the GM Recall

General Motors (GM) has recently announced a significant recall affecting 449,671 trucks and SUVs due to a potentially faulty brake fluid warning light. This action is part of GM’s commitment to ensure vehicle safety and address potential issues that could compromise driver control.

Affected Vehicles

The recall specifically includes 2023 models of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, alongside the 2023 and 2024 models of the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Escalade ESV. As detailed in documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the concern arises when the brake control module fails to alert the driver about brake fluid loss, which can diminish brake performance.

Resolution Steps for Owners

According to GM, the underlying issue stems from a mismatch between the brake control software and the proper calibrations. To resolve this, dealerships will implement a software update to align the software with the correct brake module calibration. For vehicles equipped with over-the-air update capabilities, owners will be able to apply the fix from the convenience of their homes. Those without this feature are required to schedule a visit to their dealership.

Dealers were notified of this recall on September 12, and GM plans to begin notifying vehicle owners via mail starting October 28. Vehicle owners can also visit the NHTSA recalls website to verify if their vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is covered under this recall.
