Introduction to the Towing Experience

Towing with the 2024 Kia EV9 has proven to be a unique challenge, particularly as I recently hitched a 2,000-pound trailer to this all-electric three-row SUV. This endeavor not only tested the EV9’s range but also its overall performance while towing. It’s essential to understand how these factors interact, especially for those considering using the EV9 for similar purposes.

Understanding EV9 Towing Capacity

Equipped with an optional towing package priced at $1,500, the 2024 Kia EV9 can achieve an impressive maximum trailering capacity of 5,000 pounds, given the trailer includes its own brakes. For trailers without braking systems, the capacity is limited to 1,653 pounds. During my experiment, the 1,920-pound trailer exceeded the non-braked rating, revealing the importance of adhering to the manufacturer’s specifications for safe towing.

Impact on Driving Range

One of the most surprising aspects of towing with the EV9 was the substantial decrease in driving range. Initially showing 345 miles of range, upon connecting the trailer, this figure plummeted to just 129 miles. While the EV9 manual indicates that range could potentially reduce by up to 50% while towing, my experience suggested a staggering 63% decrease before even starting my 100-mile journey. Familiarizing myself with the EV9’s trailering modes might provide further insights in future towing scenarios.

In summary, while the 2024 Kia EV9 demonstrates remarkable capabilities as an electric SUV, towing presents distinct challenges that require careful planning and adherence to specifications to ensure safe and efficient travel.
