The Rise of the WTF-OMOD Genre

In the world of automotive customization, the lines between classic nostalgia and modern innovation are often blurred. On one hand, there are restomods, where vintage vehicles maintain their iconic silhouettes while incorporating subtle modern conveniences. On the other hand, we have what can only be termed as WTF-OMODs, where classics undergo dramatic transformations. Enter Vigilante’s latest creation: a 1979 Jeep Cherokee that has been revamped to host an extraordinary V10 engine from a Dodge Viper.

Performance That Amazes

Words rarely go hand-in-hand like ‘Jeep’ and ‘rocket engine,’ yet this dynamo boasts an astounding 825bhp and 750lb-ft of torque. The Mopar Gen V V10 engine has been expertly bored out to 9.0 liters, which translates to 550 cubic inches of raw American power. Although Vigilante remains coy about specifics like acceleration or top speed, it’s reasonable to assume that driving this monster would leave most in awe. Indeed, deploying the full power of this Jeep may just leave you speechless.

Reimagining a Classic

The overhaul of this old Jeep is nothing short of impressive. Vigilante begins with a complete teardown, following which a modern chassis is constructed from a 3D scan of the original design. Additional enhancements include a new transfer case, robust axles, and a wiring harness tailored for the new engine. The suspension incorporates Fox Racing dampers with Eibach springs, promising a balanced stance and a smoother ride. Complementing the performance upgrades are aesthetic choices that include a blue and white two-tone paint job, embodying a welcoming, classic vibe.

Though this eye-catching 1979 Jeep Cherokee has already found a new home, similar models can be ordered—with a wait time of two to three years, and starting prices upwards of $295,000, depending on specifications. A pat on the back for the next adventure awaits!
