Introduction to VW ID 3 GTX Fire Ice

Volkswagen is planning to launch a series of limited-edition models across its ID range to bolster the appeal of its electric vehicles (EVs), similar to the approach taken with earlier internal combustion engine (ICE) models. The ID 3 GTX Fire Ice serves as a preview for these low-volume specials, reimagining the earlier Golf Fire Ice in an electric context.

Historical Context and Design

The ID 3 GTX Fire Ice draws inspiration from Volkswagen’s 1990 collaboration with German sportswear company Bögner, which resulted in the Golf Fire Ice. This model featured a unique paint treatment and special design elements that garnered significant brand exposure. With the new electric variant, VW aims to capture the same level of interest, incorporating several historical design cues from the original limited-edition Golf.

Exterior and Interior Features

The new ID 3 GTX Fire Ice boasts a vivid triple-layer electric violet pearl effect exterior, complemented by transparent matt Fire Ice graphics and a contrasting red anodized strip along the side roofline. Additionally, it comes with new 21-inch alloy wheels with a blue anodized finish and the original Bögner Fire Ice logo from the 1990s adorning the B-pillar and roof spoiler.

Inside, the vehicle retains the standard ID 3 GTX features but adds distinctive elements. The front seats, for example, feature flaming red for ‘fire’ and ice blue for ‘ice,’ quilted in a design reminiscent of Bögner’s Fire Ice down jackets.

Implications for Volkswagen’s ID Range

As Volkswagen demonstrates with the ID 3 GTX Fire Ice, there’s a clear strategy to inject nostalgic elements into its current electric lineup. This approach not only enhances the brand’s appeal but also provides an opportunity to tap into the market for unique, limited-edition EVs. By employing the same concept that made models like the Golf Rolling Stones and Golf Pink Floyd successful, VW aims to create a new wave of excitement around its electric offerings.
