Overview of the Recall

Honda has announced a significant recall affecting approximately 1,693,199 vehicles due to potential issues with the steering rack. This recall primarily pertains to several models, including the Acura Integra and Integra Type S, alongside the Honda CR-V, Honda HR-V, and the entire Civic lineup. The affected vehicles span model years from 2023 to 2025, with the base Civic’s 2022 model year also included.

Details of the Steering Rack Issue

The problem arises from an improperly produced steering gearbox worm wheel, a critical component that regulates steering functionality. As per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents, the worm wheel may swell during vehicle operation, leading to thicker grease between the worm wheel and worm gear. This swelling causes increased friction and requires more effort for steering, which can compromise vehicle safety.

Actions Taken by Honda

The NHTSA has identified early warning signs of this issue, including abnormal noises or a “sticky” feeling when turning the steering wheel. Honda is proactively addressing the situation, having already notified dealers about the recall. The car manufacturer plans to send notification letters to vehicle owners starting November 18, 2024. Affected owners are encouraged to contact their local Honda dealer to schedule an inspection. The inspection will include replacing the worm gear spring with an improved component and adjusting the grease levels as necessary. For those uncertain about their vehicle’s status, the NHTSA provides a dedicated recalls site for verification.
