Introduction

As we approach the completion of our long-term test with the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk, we’ve crossed the significant milestone of 13,000 miles. Since acquiring it in March 2023, this plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has been filled with 603 gallons of premium fuel while we monitored its performance and efficiency. Let’s delve into the details of this remarkable vehicle’s journey.

Charging Sessions and Costs

Throughout our time with the Jeep, we meticulously tracked each charging session, utilizing level 2 public charging stations along with home charging when convenient. One of the attractive features of the PHEV is the ability to recharge via standard household outlets overnight. However, determining the precise costs associated with our charging sessions has proven challenging. We confirmed a minimum expenditure of $14.56 on level 2 charging, although the total costs remain unclear. On average, we’ve gained approximately 23.1 miles of range per charging session, closely aligning with the EPA’s estimated range of 26 miles.

Fuel Efficiency Insights

From a fuel efficiency standpoint, the Grand Cherokee 4xe has demonstrated a calculated average of 21.9 miles per gallon (mpg) throughout its lifetime, with the trip computer reporting 21.3 mpg. While the EPA rates this model at a combined 23 mpg, the additional weight from off-road components and all-terrain tires may account for our slightly lower fuel economy figures. Notably, we have refrained from charging recently due to an ongoing recall, which impacted the use of the electric motor and battery pack, leaving them primarily as dead weight.

In conclusion, the 603 gallons of premium fuel consumed has resulted in a total cost of $2,779.08, averaging $4.61 per gallon and $73.13 per tank. As we near the conclusion of our testing period, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe presents an interesting case for potential buyers considering a blend of efficiency and off-road capability.
