A Unique Piece of Automotive History

The recent auction of a rare 1981 Rolls-Royce Corniche, affectionately known as ‘Jules’, highlights an unexpected chapter in the illustrious brand’s history. While Rolls-Royce is primarily known for its luxurious vehicles that grace the streets of upscale urban areas, this particular model was tailored for the rugged terrain of the 1981 Paris-Dakar rally. This remarkable vehicle sold for an astonishing $630,000.

The Creation of the Dakar Racer

This unique off-road racer was commissioned by French playboy Thierry de Montcorgé, who had a vision to transform the classic Rolls-Royce into a rally-ready contender. The vehicle underwent extensive modifications, including the replacement of its original 6.8-liter V8 with a more powerful 5.7-liter small-block Chevy V8, resulting in a boost to an impressive 350 horsepower.

A Rally with Challenges

During the 1981 Dakar rally, the Rolls-Royce was not just a novelty; it proved to be a formidable competitor, achieving a remarkable position of 13th among nearly 300 entrants. Although it didn’t finish the race due to a crash, it showcased the ability to reach speeds up to 120 mph on gravel roads. Despite its setbacks, the Corniche’s legacy as a unique racing vehicle reflects the daring spirit of motorsports, merging luxury with adventure. With recent sales underscoring its value, ‘Jules’ stands testament to an extraordinary intersection of elegance and performance.
