The 2025 BMW M5 will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2024. Pricing, including $1,175 destination, will start at $120,675.
Powertrain Specs
In the M5, the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine churns out the same 577 hp and 553 pounds-feet of torque as it does in the XM Label. And, just as in the SUV, it’s complemented by an electric motor nested in the eight-speed automatic transmission.
The motor contributes up to 194 hp and 207 pounds-feet of torque, which a patented gear drive multiplies to 332 pounds-feet. Since electric motors and gas engines produce power differently, you can’t just add peak figures from each and arrive at the M5’s maximum output, but the system’s total of 717 hp and 738 pounds-feet of torque are gobsmacking just the same. Continually adjustable flaps in the sport exhaust system control the engine’s volume, while a quartet of 4-inch tailpipes imbue the rear view with appropriate verve.
Standard xDrive all-wheel drive helps the 2025 M5 transmit that tremendous power to the road. BMW claims the sports sedan will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds. However, seeing as the previous-generation car hit 60 mph in a claimed 3.1 seconds, it seems safe to expect the new M5 will duck under that bar. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, or 190 with the optional M Driver’s Package. And with a 14.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack tucked under the floor, the 2025 M5 is also capable of driving some 25 miles on electricity alone.
Chassis and Suspension Upgrades
In addition to the standard front-to-rear torque split, drivers can select the 4WD Sport mode, which sends a greater portion of the powertrain’s torque to the rear axle. Or, with the stability control system switched off, drivers can select a rear-drive mode. That stability control needs to be deactivated to engage this setting tells you what it is for; BMW isn’t calling it Drift mode, but that’s what it is.
Naturally, the M5 features extensive bracing and a reworked suspension to stiffen the body and help corral all that power. A unique double wishbone suspension up front and dedicated five-link rear suspension design trim weight through widespread use of aluminum. Adaptive dampers are standard. And along with its variable steering ratio and assist, the 2025 M5 also features rear-wheel steering.
The standard front disc brakes measure 16.1 inches and are squeezed by six-piston calipers, and 15.7-inch discs with single-piston calipers are out back. Optional M carbon ceramic brakes feature larger 16.5-inch front discs. The standard setup uses blue calipers (red and black are available), while the carbon ceramics are squeezed by gold binders. A staggered wheel and tire setup fits 285/40-ZR20s performance rubber up front and 295/35-ZR21s on the rear axle.
Standard and Available Safety Features
The 2025 M5’s standard safety roster includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitors with steering intervention, rear parking sensors and traffic-sign recognition. The Driving Assistant Professional Package includes adaptive cruise control and enhanced lane keeping with emergency steering assist for hands-on semi-autonomous highway driving, while traffic jam assist will allow hands-off driving below 40 mph.
BMW’s new Curved Display is standard on the M5, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 14.9-inch infotainment system joined together under a single pane of seamless, curved glass. Running BMW Operating System 8.5, the infotainment system responds to touch and voice commands, as well as the traditional control knob. A head-up display with augmented-reality navigation is also standard.
Unique Looks Outside and In
Fenders that stretch the M5’s width 3 inches up front and 1.9 inches at the rear lend the performance sedan a more muscular look than that of the regular 5 Series. Black and body-color exterior trim replace much of the brightwork of the standard car, reinforcing the M’s menace. A unique front end channels air to a panoply of heat exchangers in the nose, while a lip spoiler and diffuser keep the rear end tight against the tarmac at speed.
BMW is debuting a new leather finish in the 2025 M5. Dubbed BMW Individual Full Merino Metallic, this upholstery is created using a new refining process that imparts a unique pearl-effect finish to the hides used in the car; it will be offered in a pair of two-tone color options. A panoramic moonroof, adjustable ambient lighting and an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround-system system are standard. Buyers interested in a lower center of gravity can save more than 66 pounds by opting for the available carbon-fiber roof panel.
