Why Tire Pressure is Important

Checking and adjusting your tire pressure is an essential part of safe driving that is often overlooked. Improper tire pressure can lead to a range of issues, including poor handling, longer stopping distances, and increased risk of blowouts. Furthermore, it can affect ride quality and result in uneven tread wear, jeopardizing both safety and comfort during your travels.

How to Check Tire Pressure

The manufacturer’s recommended tire pressures for your car are typically listed on a sticker located on the driver-side front door jamb. This information is also available in your owner’s manual. A common range for passenger cars is between 30-35 pounds per square inch (psi). Keep in mind that some vehicles may require different pressures for front and rear tires, especially under varying driving conditions like heavy loads or high speeds.

Understanding Temperature Effects

Tire pressure can fluctuate due to changes in temperature, which is an important factor to consider. The general rule is that tire pressure drops by approximately 1 psi for every 10-degree decrease in air temperature. This means that tires inflated to the proper pressure during warm weather may be significantly underinflated in colder temperatures. To ensure accuracy, check your tire pressure after your vehicle has been parked and cooled down, preferably in a shaded area.

Lastly, remember to regularly check your spare tire’s pressure as well. Air can leak from it over time, and some spares require higher inflation levels than standard tires. By following these guidelines for checking and adjusting tire pressure, you can maintain your vehicle’s performance and ensure a safer driving experience.
