Overview of the Recall

Kia has announced a significant recall affecting over 82,200 units of its popular Niro compact SUVs, which includes hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric models. The vehicles involved in this recall span model years 2023 to 2025 and have been flagged due to a potential issue with the front passenger airbag system.

Potential Risks and Safety Concerns

The concern arises from the floor wiring located beneath the front passenger seat. Repeated adjustments to the seat may lead to damage of this wiring. As a result, there are serious implications regarding the airbag functionality during a crash. The airbag may fail to deploy or be improperly activated. In particular, this poses heightened risks for small occupants, such as children, who may be unprotected if the airbag does not deactivate as intended.

Remedy and Assistance for Affected Owners

Kia is committed to ensuring the safety of its customers. Therefore, dealers will inspect the vehicles free of charge, replacing and rerouting the floor wiring harness, while also installing protective wiring covers. Affected owners will be notified of this recall starting March 14. For immediate assistance or to report further issues, owners can contact Kia at 800-333-4542, using recall number SC332. Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers resources at 888-327-4236 or through their website, where individuals can verify their vehicle’s identification number for more information on this important safety notice.
