The Rise and Fall of Mutt Motorcycles

Birmingham-based Mutt Motorcycles once promised the thrill of retro-styled bike riding with their charming small-capacity machines. Co-founded in 2013 by Will Rigg and Benny Thomas, the brand developed a niche in the commuter market, enticing learners with their affordable, air-cooled Suzuki GN125 powered models. However, as of March 3, Mutt has sadly entered administration, signaling a downturn in demand that has left many employees redundant.

The Administration Announcement

On March 3, responsible parties appointed David Shambrook and Matthew Haw of RSM UK Restructuring Advisory LLP as joint administrators. Market trends have posed significant challenges for Mutt, causing a decline in sales that ultimately led to the company’s closure. The fate of the 18 employees was sealed, with many being let go as Mutt ceased trading entirely. The company is now unable to fulfill existing sales, warranties, or undertake repair works, leaving customers in a lurch.

What’s Next for Mutt and the Industry?

While the future remains uncertain, the joint administrators are in discussions with several interested parties who are considering acquiring the bike and parts stock along with the Mutt brand. If negotiations culminate in a sale, further updates could be on the horizon. In a market where phrases like ‘decline in demand‘ have become common, Mutt isn’t the only British brand struggling; similar stories are unfolding across the industry. As we wait for further announcements, Mutt’s inspired designs continue to evoke bittersweet nostalgia in the biking community.
