The Journey Towards F1 2026

As Sauber enters its final season in Formula 1, there’s a noticeable turbulence in their flight path towards becoming the Audi F1 works team. Sky F1’s David Croft has aptly pointed out that this transition is not going ‘particularly smoothly.’ One can’t help but wonder if there’s a chance of a bumpy landing when the team officially don’t just wear new colors but also take on a new identity in 2026.

Waves of Change: Personnel Issues

A significant part of the hitch in this transition has come from its personnel shake-up. Following an agreement in 2022 to take over Sauber, Audi has faced challenges that seem to have it bogged down. Chief Executive Officer Andreas Seidl was roped in initially, but just four months later, Audi announced his departure amidst rumors of a ‘constant battle’ for control with former Audi head of development, Oliver Hoffmann. Talk about a chaotic workplace!

Charting a New Course

With both Seidl and Hoffmann shown the exit door, Audi now is looking to steady the ship. Former Ferrari team boss, Mattia Binotto, takes up a dual role as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer. Will Binotto’s experience pave a smoother road for Audi F1 as they strive to transform Sauber into a competitive force? Only time will tell, but looking at the current mess, it might require a wizardry of sorts!
