Overview of the Recall

Honda is issuing a recall for approximately 152,800 Acura MDX SUVs due to a potential safety hazard involving rear tailgate lid lights and exterior position lights. This recall affects model-year 2014-2020 MDXs that were manufactured with lights susceptible to failure from moisture intrusion.

Potential Risks Associated with Lighting Failure

The primary concern with these vehicles is that moisture may penetrate through an unevenly sealed surface on the tailgate lid light. If this occurs, the lights can fail, which could lead to a short circuit affecting the position light fuse. The failure of the exterior position lights may hinder the vehicle’s visibility to other road users at night, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.

What Owners Should Do

To address this issue, Acura dealers will be performing necessary repairs free of charge. This includes installing a fuse harness and, if necessary, replacing the tailgate lid lights and repairing the body dust sealer. Furthermore, certain 2014-2019 MDXs involved in a previous recall for similar lid light assemblies will be required to undergo this new repair as well.

Acura plans to notify affected owners by May 27, but those with immediate questions can reach out to Acura’s customer service at 800-382-2238. Additionally, inquiries can be directed to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or owners can visit their website to verify their vehicle identification number and find further details.
