The Future of Affordable EVs in Europe

With a keen eye on sustainability, Volkswagen is finalizing an exciting lineup of affordable electric vehicles (EVs) set to hit the European market. The ID. Every1 and ID. 2all—the latter even boasting a GTI hot hatch variant—are gearing up for production. This move aligns with VW’s commitment to embracing electric mobility.

The Absence of Small EVs in the U.S. Market

However, it may be disappointing for American consumers to learn that these innovative small EVs will not make their way across the Atlantic. Volkswagen’s decision to refrain from introducing the larger ID. 3 into the U.S. market set a precedent that continues with the ID. 2all and ID. Every1. As more focus shifts towards SUVs and crossovers, the choices seem limited, with only the Jetta and GTI maintaining a sedan presence in the lineup.

Shifting Strategies and Market Demand

VW’s North American CEO, Kjell Gruner, recently shed light on the manufacturer’s evolving strategy. During a roundtable discussion at the New York Auto Show, he confirmed the company’s reasoning behind the unavailability of the ID. 7 in the U.S. market—fears of insufficient demand. This demonstrates Volkswagen’s agile approach to navigating the complex landscape of consumer preferences in North America.

While the excitement surrounding affordable EVs is palpable in Europe, American buyers are left wondering: when will they get their fair share of the electric revolution? Only time will tell as Volkswagen continues to refine its focus on SUV and crossover models.
