The Gray Ghost: A Modern Marvel

Harley-Davidson has officially revealed the fifth model in their Icons Collection, the limited-edition Fat Boy Gray Ghost, which commemorates 35 years of the iconic Fat Boy family. This motorcycle boasts a stunning polished metal look, achieved through a high-tech process known as Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). This remarkable coating goes beyond traditional chrome, offering a mirror-like shine that not only dazzles but is designed to withstand the test of time.

The Art of PVD Coating

Unlike the old-school painting or chroming techniques, PVD employs a vacuum-based method that deposits a thin metallic coating on the motorcycle’s body parts, including the tank and fenders. The process activates a ‘target’ metal, such as aluminum, charged positively along with the negatively charged component. When vaporized, the metal atoms congregate to form a cohesive, resilient layer. This innovation marks the first time PVD has been applied to large body panels in a production model, elevating the aesthetic while enhancing durability.

Embracing a Rich Heritage

In a nod to its legacy, the Gray Ghost is limited to just 1,990 units, reflecting the original Fat Boy’s birth year. Under the skin, it features Harley’s powerful 1923cc Milwaukee-Eight 117 motor, promising performance alongside advanced technological features like cornering ABS. As Brad Richards, Harley’s VP of Design, notes, the DNA of the original model remains, while the Gray Ghost exemplifies a clean and contemporary design philosophy. This motorcycle isn’t merely a tribute; it’s a leap into the future, resonating with custom craftsmanship and environmental considerations typical of Harley-Davidson.
