Introduction to Dynamic Suspension Adjustment

BMW has taken an impressive leap in motorcycle technology with their innovative Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) system. This remarkable feature, debuting with the 2025 R1300R roadster, allows riders to experience the feeling of a spring rate swap at the mere flick of a switch. Until now, most electronically adjustable suspension systems primarily focused on damping characteristics. With DSA, BMW pushes the boundaries by simulating both stiffer and softer spring rates depending on the selected riding mode.

How DSA Works

At the heart of this technology is an external reservoir located at the bottom of the fork leg. When the suspension is compressed, instead of merely compressing the spring from the top, the displaced oil is redirected through an electronically controlled valve. This unique hydraulic action works against the spring from below, effectively creating a stiffer feel without changing the spring itself. As the product manager, Matthias Hillebrand, elaborates, the experience becomes akin to compressing the spring by 1.1mm, thus requiring 10% more force to achieve the same compression externally.

Benefits of the DSA System

The versatility of BMW’s DSA allows riders to adjust their forks between comfort and sport settings seamlessly. Whether solo riding or two-up with a loaded bike, DSA adapts to varying conditions without the hassle of physical adjustment. Additionally, when riders demand more front-end support, this system provides resistance against extreme braking and acceleration forces, stabilizing the bike’s geometry and enhancing handling. On the other hand, shifting to a gentler riding mode transforms the experience into a plush, mile-eating ride. Currently, only available on the R1300R, BMW hasn’t ruled out further expansion, aiming to incorporate DSA into more models, including the S1000RR.
