Introduction to the Electrification at Pier 400
As part of its ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and enhance operational efficiency, APM Terminals (APMT) at Pier 400 is set to deploy 20 Orange EV yard trucks. These heavy-duty electric terminal tractors, often referred to as ‘yard dogs’ or ‘ro-ro trucks,’ are designed for short runs at low speeds, making them an ideal solution for efficient operations in a controlled space.
A Step Towards Decarbonization
The introduction of the Orange EV e-trievers marks a significant milestone, as APMT now operates the largest fleet of electric terminal tractors in the Port of Los Angeles. This transition reflects a broader commitment to decarbonization in maritime operations. By integrating electric vehicles into their fleet, APMT contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and promotes sustainable practices within the logistics sector.
Investment in Workforce Development
Beyond electrification, APMT is leveraging this project to enhance workforce skills through a collaborative initiative with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA). A training program for maintaining electric tractors is being established, ensuring that the workforce is equipped with the necessary skills to operate and maintain this innovative technology. This investment in training not only supports the workforce but also sets a precedent for future advancements in port operations.
