Introduction to Electrification in Construction

As the construction industry seeks to decarbonize, the transition to electric equipment is becoming increasingly necessary. However, the high upfront costs of battery electric vehicles pose significant barriers for fleet operators. Fortunately, innovative solutions, such as those developed by Manitou, offer a path forward.

Manitou’s Retrofit Solution

The new retrofit option showcased in the MT 1440 telehandler illustrates how older equipment can be updated with modern technology. Co-developed by Manitou Group and Kinell engineers, this cost-effective and energy-efficient solution is designed specifically for the rental sector, evidenced by its application with Kiloutou.

Benefits of Retrofitting

This retrofit not only targets recent models but is also applicable to equipment as old as seven years—greatly expanding its potential impact. According to François Renault, Kiloutou’s Director of Equipment and Sustainable Development, retrofitting is a viable alternative to replacing an entire fleet with new electric equipment. This approach allows operators to combine a comprehensive fleet upgrade program with significant cost savings.

The innovative solution replaces the traditional diesel engine with a high-capacity battery that powers a 55 kW electric motor. Although specific battery details remain undisclosed, Kiloutou anticipates that a single charge will last through approximately 80% of daily operational cycles.

As Manitou develops this prototype further, they aim to harness the benefits of electric technologies while ensuring that safety and performance standards are met. By retrofitting diesel-powered telehandlers, such as the MT 1440, Manitou plans to help reduce emissions and noise levels on urban job sites, a critical need in today’s construction landscape.
