Overview of the Recall

BMW has issued a recall affecting over 70,000 electric vehicles (EVs) due to a serious potential safety risk. The recall, which includes 70,852 models manufactured between 2022 and 2024, is primarily due to a software issue that could lead to sudden loss of power. This occurrence can be alarming, especially during critical driving situations, such as overtaking other vehicles.

Affected Models

The models involved in this recall include:

  • 35,414 i4s built between 2022 and 2025
  • 4,674 i5s produced in 2024 and 2025
  • 5,484 i7s manufactured in 2024
  • 25,280 ix SUVs assembled from 2022 to 2024

Owners of these EVs are urged to take immediate action and check if their vehicles are affected by this alarming issue. BMW is working to resolve the situation by addressing the software that triggers the fail-safe shutdown of the high-voltage system.

The Nature of the Issue

Initially, BMW had investigated faults within the drive units themselves instead of the software responsible for their operation. With the low frequency of incidents, pinpointing the exact cause proved challenging. Between 2021 and 2022, the company received warranty claims related to this exact issue, indicating a potential fault in the drive motor. However, after thorough examinations of the motor, high-voltage battery, and electronic control units, the source remained elusive.

The manufacturer’s decisive action in recalling these models reflects its commitment to safety and customer satisfaction. It’s crucial for owners to remain vigilant and responsive to any alerts from BMW regarding recalls in the future.
