Introduction to Start-Stop Technology

If you own a petrol or diesel car made within the last decade, you are likely familiar with start-stop systems. These systems automatically turn off the engine when the vehicle is stopped, only to restart it when the driver presses the accelerator. Honda is now introducing a similar concept in its motorcycles, beginning with the CB125F. This innovation is set to enhance fuel economy and reduce emissions in manual-transmission bikes.

The Evolution of Start-Stop Systems

Start-stop technology, or idling-stop, has a long history, dating back to the first production car equipped with this feature—Toyota’s Crown model released in 1974. Over the years, various eco-friendly vehicles and motorcycles have adopted the system. Honda played a significant role in this advancement, introducing start-stop features in models like the PCX125 and Gold Wing DCT Tour. However, the latest CB125F stands out as it integrates this technology into a traditional manual transmission.

Infrastructure of the CB125F’s Start-Stop System

For the CB125F, implementing start-stop required minimal updates. The 2021 model already featured a starter-generator in place of a conventional starter motor. The new model is equipped with a higher-capacity battery to support frequent starts efficiently. The enhanced ECU monitors various factors such as speed, throttle position, and engine temperature, determining when to activate the start-stop feature. When specific conditions are met, the system shuts off the engine to conserve fuel and cut emissions. This seamless transition ensures that power returns as soon as the throttle is engaged, facilitating a smooth driving experience.
