Welcome to the Tesla Circus

After much anticipation, Tesla has finally rolled into India, but it seems they brought their own carnival of confusion along with them. Despite several attempts over the last half-decade ending in a disappointing “not today, India,” the electric giant has taken the plunge—just, you know, not quite into the savings pool.

Tariffs? What Tariffs?

Now, you’d think after all this fuss, they’d take advantage of the new import duty reduction initiative, right? Nope! Instead, we’re seeing prices that could give even the wealthiest Indian a case of sticker shock. The Model Y RWD is priced at a jaw-dropping ₹61,07,190 (that’s around $71,000!), while the long-range version tags along at ₹69,15,190 ($80,000). What fuels these prices? Certainly not a friendly game of ‘let’s see how high we can go’!

The Plot Thickens

Though Tesla is busy hiring service and sales staff as if setting up an extensive network, they’ve informed the Indian government that they’re not planning to manufacture EVs locally. This decision means they won’t be reaping the rewards from those sweet, sweet reduced import duties, making the pricing conundrum even trickier to comprehend. With that, consumers are left scratching their heads, wondering if buying a Tesla is worth the hefty price tag in a country that is not quite used to such extravagance. But, hey, who wouldn’t want to own a piece of the electric dream, even if it feels more like a nightmare for the wallet?
