The Allure of National Parks

America’s national parks are among the most cherished travel destinations, attracting visitors from every corner of the country. From the majestic peaks of Yellowstone to the stunning vistas of Yosemite, these natural wonders call to adventurers and nature lovers alike. Yet, as the shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) continues, it becomes vital to address the unique challenges EV drivers face when venturing into these protected landscapes.

The Need for EV Charging Stations

While driving an electric vehicle through national parks means a quieter ride and cleaner air, the current charging infrastructure is sorely lacking. Around 332 million visitors explored the country’s national parks last year, but with merely 100 EV charging stations scattered across the 63 parks, the demand far exceeds the supply. Most of these stations are the slower level 2 chargers, making it clear that we are at the “final EV frontier” regarding charging accessibility in these beautiful, yet often remote destinations.

Looking Ahead

Despite these challenges, progress is being made. With Rivian investing in charging stations near parks and Yellowstone now offering charging at all five entrances, optimism is rising. However, only 12 of the largest 20 national parks currently have any EV charging options. The reality remains—anyone planning a national park getaway in an EV will need to carefully map out charging stops, as we continue to advocate for robust charging infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of electric vehicles on our roads.
