A Groundbreaking Agreement

In a record-setting deal worth billions, Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer XCMG has made a significant move towards decarbonizing the mining sector. They have committed to delivering more than 200 of their impressive 240-tonne electric haul trucks to Australian mining giant Fortescue. This marks one of the most meaningful steps yet in creating a greener future for mining operations.

Leading the Charge in Green Technology

XCMG is increasingly recognized for its commitment to sustainability, having pioneered best practice models for smart mining at China Huaneng’s Yimin mine and earning the 2025 Decarbonizing Mining Award. Ranking among the world’s top four open-pit heavy equipment manufacturers, the company is expertly crafting high-quality electric equipment solutions. The recent partnership with Fortescue highlights not only the demand for innovative green solutions but also the immense capability of XCMG’s electric trucks.

Towards a Sustainable Future

The 240t electric haul trucks are colossal, designed to handle payloads exceeding 500,000 lbs. With an electric drive system boasting 1,900 kW (2,550 hp), these trucks are built to conquer steep grades while maintaining speeds of up to 56 km/h (35 mph). They embody a new frontier of mining where emissions are slashed without compromising efficiency. Fortescue’s executive chairman, Dr. Andrew Forrest, aptly points out that this partnership is helping to foster a spirit of global cooperation. With Fortescue already saving hundreds of millions in fuel costs, this deal promises not just to revolutionize the mining industry but also to make a substantial impact on global diesel demand.
