General Motors (GM) has recently issued a recall affecting over 23,000 units of the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV. This move comes as the company identified a unique issue with the pedestrian alert sound system, which may not generate sufficient noise. The Problem at Hand
In a letter sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on September 30, GM revealed that the recall specifically targets Chevy Equinox EV models manufactured between August 8, 2023, and August 28, 2024. The faulty alert system could lead to situations where pedestrians are unaware of the approaching vehicle, particularly at lower speeds. As a result, these vehicles may not meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 141, which pertains to minimum sound requirements for hybrid and electric vehicles.

While GM has not reported any incidents connected to this issue, the recall has been issued as a precautionary measure. The company is currently working on a solution that involves updating the Body Control Module (BCM) instead of a full replacement.
