Expanding Solar Initiatives
Meta has taken significant steps in its commitment to renewable energy by signing new power purchase agreements (PPAs) with ENGIE North America. This partnership now amounts to more than 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy across four projects in Texas. While this focus on solar is commendable, it’s a bit disheartening that Meta is simultaneously investing in gas plants in Louisiana to power its data centers. However, the strides in solar energy shouldn’t be overshadowed.

The Swenson Ranch Solar Project
Among the latest agreements is the impressive 600-megawatt (MW) Swenson Ranch solar project located in Stonewall County, southeast of Lubbock. Expected to come online in 2027, Swenson Ranch will be ENGIE’s largest solar farm in its 11 GW North American portfolio, which also includes wind and battery storage projects. Meta is set to purchase 100% of the power generated by Swenson Ranch, highlighting its dedication to sustainable operations for its US data centers.
Community Impact and Future Goals
This $900 million project is more than just a solar initiative; it promises to create over 350 construction jobs and generate an estimated $158 million in tax revenue for Stonewall County and the local hospital district throughout its lifespan. Dave Carroll, CEO of ENGIE North America, emphasized the importance of solar by stating, “Our objective is to bring reliable, cost-competitive power to the grid as rapidly as possible.” Meta’s global energy head, Urvi Parekh, echoed this sentiment, noting that the expanded deal enables Meta to match 100% of its electricity usage with clean and renewable energy, essential for supporting its data center operations.
