Charging Expectations: The Need for Speed

Hyundai’s electric vehicles, particularly the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, are already among the fastest charging EVs available, but that hardly satisfies their engineers. Why? Because when it comes to charging an EV, Hyundai believes that 3 minutes is the magic number. That’s right, just like filling up your trusty gas tank, drivers want their electric rides topped off in a jiffy!

The Current State of EV Charging

Currently, the Ioniq 5 boasts an impressive recharge capability to zoom from 10% to 80% in only 18 minutes with a 350 kW DC fast charger—fast enough to grab a coffee but not fast enough for their ambitious vision. As Tyrone Johnson, head of Hyundai’s Motor Europe Technical Center, puts it, customers expect charging times to rival that of internal combustion engines (ICE). If it takes much longer, they fear they’ll be marooned like a stranded ship!

Hyundai’s Future Charging Innovations

Hyundai isn’t just sitting back and twiddling its thumbs, though. They’re working tirelessly on introducing 400 kW charging technology, which would dramatically reduce those charging times to match the swift pump-and-go of gas vehicles. Their goal? To eliminate range anxiety and cut charging times without heftier batteries to lug around. With competitors like the Porsche Taycan leading the charge (quite literally) at up to 320 kW, the EV race is heating up. Will Hyundai achieve their 3-minute charging dream? Only time will tell, but drivers sure hope they’re not left waiting!
