The Promise of Solid-State Batteries
Solid-state batteries have long been hailed as the holy grail for electric vehicles, particularly for those lightweight electric bicycles that we often charge indoors. These innovative batteries offer immense safety advantages over traditional lithium-ion batteries and boast improved energy density. In essence, they can pack more power into a smaller battery or allow for the same size to carry more capacity. Sounds like a dream for every e-bike enthusiast, right?

The Wait for Innovation
For decades, industry experts have proclaimed that solid-state batteries were just five years away from hitting the market. If you’ve been holding out in anticipation, I hate to break it to you, but you might still have to keep waiting. Just when we thought the electric vehicle landscape was ready for a revolution, solid-state technology remains on the horizon. But fear not, there’s a silver lining!
Semi-Solid-State Batteries to the Rescue
Fortunately, while us e-bike aficionados might still be twiddling our thumbs for solid-state innovations, semi-solid-state batteries are poised to enter the scene. Set to launch on their first production e-bike next month, these new batteries promise to bring some excitement to our rides. I recently got a glimpse of these exciting developments at EICMA 2025, where I mingled with engineers from the company behind this tech.
Stay tuned, because these semi-solid state wonders may just lead us closer to the electric bike revolution we’ve all been waiting for!
