Introducing Sleipner: A Truck Named After a Norse Legend

Scania is making waves in the mining industry with its first-ever fully-electric 8×4 heavy-duty mining tipper, dubbed Sleipner. Named after the legendary eight-legged steed of Odin, this electric beast is already hard at work at Sweden’s Malmberget iron ore mine. Talk about a truck that’s as mythical as its namesake!

Electric Power Meets Enhanced Design

What sets the Sleipner apart? Scania’s innovative modular HD vehicle architecture allows for exceptional load capacity and agility, perfect for navigating the tight confines of the ore mine. It’s not just a pretty face; this electric marvel can tackle the steep gradients and challenging terrains like a boss. With the partnership with mining firm LKAB, progress is inevitable, and Tony Sandberg, head of Scania’s pilot partner, couldn’t agree more: “Each truck we introduce helps us sharpen our electrification skills across the toughest environments.” Oh, the thrill of teamwork!

Driving Towards a Greener Future

With LKAB moving over five million tons of rock annually, converting their heavy loads to electricity could lead to a significant reduction in harmful emissions. Sleipner’s impressive 416 kWh battery pack powers a robust 400 kW electric motor, making it a formidable alternative to its diesel counterparts. While official torque figures are still under wraps, we can expect it to rival conventional Scania diesel engines, typically delivering around 3,000 nm of torque. Watch out, world; the tide is turning!

In a nutshell, Scania’s Sleipner isn’t just a truck; it’s a revolution on wheels, paving the way for a more sustainable mining industry. And just like its mythical namesake, it’s here to lead the charge into the future.
