Introducing the ID. Polo: Volkswagen’s Latest Attempt at Electrification

Set your calendars for 2026! Volkswagen is rolling out the ID. Polo, the first of its shiny new family of entry-level electric vehicles (EVs). Expect a tiny car with big ambitions—and, apparently, a slightly bigger price tag than you might have thought. Initially, they promised a €25,000 starting point, but whispers suggest that the reality is more like “hold my beer, it’s going to be a bit pricier!”

Pricing Shenanigans: What Happened to the Affordable EV?

In a classic twist, the people at Volkswagen, or as I like to call them, the “Magicians of Misleading Pricing,” may not be sticking to the €25,000 ballpark. According to news from the German paper Handelsblatt, it looks like the introductory ID. Polo won’t be launching in the way we eagerly anticipated. Instead, prepare for options well above €30,000 ($35,000)—that’s electric mobility for those who’ve really been saving up!

Is This Electric Mobility or Just Electric Monopoly?

Thomas Schäfer, Volkswagen’s brand boss, initially touted the aim for approachable electric mobility. But if we can only get our hands on the high-end models at launch, what exactly does “accessible” mean? Looks like an entry-point into the future of driving might just be a high-jump instead. So, will the ID. Polo mark the dawn of affordable EVs, or are we all just being led down a rabbit hole of rising prices? Stay tuned; your wallet might have more answers than you think!
