Genesis is marking its 10th anniversary with an ambitious product roadmap that includes a new flagship electric SUV, performance-oriented models, and a luxury off-road vehicle. That off-roader has now been spotted in public for the first time—but early impressions suggest it may be more conservative than the striking concept that previewed it.
Genesis first hinted at its off-road ambitions in April last year with the unveiling of the Genesis X Gran Equator Concept at the New York International Auto Show. Described as the brand’s first “adventure vehicle concept,” it aimed to blend traditional overlanding cues with Genesis’ design-led luxury approach. The concept featured a clean yet rugged aesthetic, auxiliary trail lights, integrated roof rails, oversized 24-inch wheels, and a distinctive split tailgate with built-in seating.

From Concept to Test Mule
Speculation around a production version intensified last October after images surfaced of a modified Genesis Electrified GV70 undergoing testing with visible off-road hardware. The prototype showed elements similar to Hyundai’s XRT treatment, including a prominent front tow hook, chunkier tyres, and raised suspension.
Now, new footage captured by ShortsCar appears to show what many believe is the Gran Equator test mule driving publicly for the first time. However, rather than resembling the bold concept, the vehicle looks almost identical to the current Electrified GV70, albeit with light off-road modifications. The minimalist, purpose-built styling of the Gran Equator concept is largely absent—at least in this early test form.
Powertrain Still Unconfirmed
Genesis has yet to officially confirm the off-roader’s powertrain. That said, the closed-off grille and the use of the Electrified GV70 as a test base strongly suggest a battery-electric setup. Still, other possibilities remain on the table. Genesis has recently shifted away from an EV-only strategy and now plans to offer a mix of EV, hybrid, and extended-range electric (EREV) models. As a result, a hybrid or EREV version of the off-road SUV cannot be ruled out at this stage.
Where It Fits in the Lineup
Current expectations point to the luxury off-road SUV arriving as a 2027 model, following the debut of the flagship GV90 and updated GV70 hybrid and EREV variants. Based on what has been seen so far, the off-roader may ultimately emerge as a new GV70-based trim—potentially mirroring the approach Hyundai took with the IONIQ 5 XRT—rather than as a standalone, radically styled model.
Perspective
At this early stage, Genesis appears to be testing functionality before committing to form. The production version may still evolve significantly from the prototype now circulating, or the brand may choose a more restrained path that prioritises everyday usability over concept-car drama. Whether Genesis delivers a true luxury overlander or a subtly rugged GV70 derivative remains an open question—one that should become clearer as the model moves closer to its official debut.
