Overview of the Recall

BMW is recalling more than 40,700 units of its X3 SUV due to a significant safety concern involving malfunctioning rear door locks. The affected vehicles include model-year 2022-2024 X3 sDrive30i and xDrive30i SUVs.

Safety Concerns

The recall addresses a critical issue where the rear door-locking modules may not function as intended, allowing the doors to unlock unexpectedly. This malfunction could potentially result in the rear doors opening unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion, posing a heightened risk of injury to rear-seat occupants.

Next Steps for Owners

To remedy this problem, BMW will replace the faulty rear door-locking modules at no cost to the vehicle owners. Notifications to affected owners will begin on April 14. Owners who have questions or concerns regarding this recall can reach out to BMW customer service at 800-525-7417. Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has provided a vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236. For more information, vehicle owners can also visit the NHTSA’s website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more about the recall.
