Enhanced Charging Experience for Rivian Owners
Rivian owners are set to enjoy an even smoother experience on their upcoming road trips, thanks to a strategic partnership with the fledgling charging network, Ionna. As reported by Tech Brew, this collaboration will introduce a plug-and-charge functionality at Ionna’s stations. In practical terms, this means drivers will simply connect their vehicle to the charger, and the charging session will commence automatically, provided they have their payment method configured within the smartphone app.

The Growing Ionna Network
Ionna is not just any charging network; it’s a new DC fast charging initiative backed by eight of the automotive giants, including BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota. Their ambitious goal is to create a comprehensive network of 30,000 charging bays across the United States by 2030. Currently, Ionna operates 12 charging stations equipped with cutting-edge 400-kilowatt chargers, available with CCS1 and NACS connectors. Many of these locations are designed to feel akin to traditional gas stations, offering amenities such as restrooms and food options.
Rivian’s Commitment to Charging Solutions
It’s important to note that Rivian’s partnership with Ionna does not signal a retreat from its own charging infrastructure. The company continues to invest in its Rivian Adventure Network of DC fast chargers and the Rivian Waypoints network of Level 2 chargers. According to Wassym Bensaid, Rivian’s Chief Software Officer, “We continue to invest in the Rivian charging network and provide that seamless experience to our customers.” He further emphasized that Rivian envisions an open ecosystem that offers various options for drivers. This partnership will mirror the integration approach used with Tesla’s Supercharger network, guaranteeing a user-friendly experience for Rivian owners.
