Volkswagen Dominates EV Sales

In an impressive turn of events, the Volkswagen Group has taken a commanding lead in Germany’s electric vehicle (EV) market, claiming eight of the top ten best-selling electric cars in the first half of 2025. With a remarkable rise in electric car sales—up 35% from the previous year—Germany set a new record with nearly 249,155 units sold.

Record Growth in Electric Vehicle Sales

This year’s growth starkly contrasts the 16% decline in EV sales observed in the first half of 2024, following the end of the EV subsidy program in 2023. Despite the absence of these incentives, electric cars have outperformed the overall market, which saw a decrease of 5% in sales, amounting to 1,402,789 vehicles sold. As a response to this growth, Germany is revamping its incentive structure for EVs starting this month.

Highlighting Popular Models

Among the popular models, the Volkswagen ID.7 has surprisingly taken the top slot, with 18,017 units sold, showcasing the brand’s stronghold on the EV market. Apart from the ID.7, the only non-Volkswagen models to make the top ten were Tesla’s Model Y and BMW’s iX1. It’s noteworthy that while the overall EV landscape flourished, Tesla’s sales were hit hard, dropping 58% in the same timeframe. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrids also gained traction, increasing by 56%, with Volkswagen’s Tiguan leading the charge.

This first half of 2025 marks a significant comeback for Volkswagen in their home market, but challenges linger, particularly regarding US tariffs impacting their profitability. With strategy adjustments and new incentives, the Volkswagen Group is poised to navigate the evolving EV landscape effectively.
