The Auction of Prototypes and Components

Fast forward to two years later, and Sono Motors is auctioning off its prototypes and components on an Austrian website. The auction includes a variety of parts essential for solar electric vehicles, such as electric motors starting at just €50, front seats for €14, and solar panels. Eye-catching prototypes like a unique Renault Twingo-based mule and later models are also available, some starting at €600. However, it’s crucial to note that these prototypes are not road-legal, with no paperwork available for registration.

The Vision Behind the Solar EV

Initially unveiled in 2017, Sono Motors’ solar EV prototype aimed to harness solar power effectively, boasting 330 solar cells capable of generating around 18 miles of range from sunlight. Despite a promising start, production delays and cost-cutting measures ultimately hindered the vision of a sustainable vehicle with a starting price of just $25,000. With its prototypes now up for auction, enthusiasts have a chance to own a piece of innovative automotive history, one that highlights both the potential and pitfalls of solar-powered transportation.
