Understanding the Recall

Nissan has recently announced a recall affecting over 19,000 of its beloved Leaf models from 2021 to 2022. This recall is particularly relevant for vehicles equipped with a level 3 quick charging port. The issue at hand is the potential for the battery to overheat during fast charging, presenting a safety concern for Leaf owners.

What Caused the Overheating Issue?

Following an investigation, Nissan discovered that Leaf vehicles built between November 3, 2020, and May 23, 2022, may be facing an excessive lithium deposit problem within the battery cells. This accumulation can lead to increased electrical resistance, causing the battery to either overheat or—worse—catch fire during level 3 charging.

Next Steps for Affected Owners

Nissan is proactively addressing the issue with a software update that will be rolled out soon. Owners of the affected Leaf models will receive a notification letter beginning October 24, 2025, detailing repair instructions and inviting them to have the battery software updated free of charge. Until the update is available, Nissan strongly advises owners to refrain from using level 3 quick charging.

For those whose Leaf models are out of warranty, Nissan will also provide reimbursement instructions in the notification letters. If you have further questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to Nissan’s customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or the NHTSA vehicle hotline at 1-888-327-4236. It’s a challenging time for Leaf owners, but help is on the way!
