A Record-Breaking Quarter for ZEVs
Californians just set another incredible record for zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) adoption! In the third quarter of 2025, residents purchased an astonishing 124,755 ZEVs. This means that nearly one in three new cars sold in the state were eco-friendly vehicles. The market share of 29.1% marks California’s highest quarterly total of ZEVs yet, showcasing a significant commitment to clean transportation.
Leadership in Clean Transportation
Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his enthusiasm for this milestone, stating that it reflects how serious Californians are about promoting cleaner air and innovation in transportation. As he noted, “we’re nearing a third of all new vehicles sold in the fourth-largest economy on the planet being clean cars.” This commitment comes as a stark contrast to federal policies, indicating that California is prepared to lead the way toward a sustainable future.
Expanding Infrastructure and Diversity in Choices
In addition to the remarkable sales figures, California has made significant strides in charging infrastructure. Thanks to new investments, nearly every Californian now lives within 10 minutes of an EV fast charger. Nancy Skinner, the state’s energy commissioner, emphasized that new EV owners can finally say goodbye to traditional gas stations and the costs associated with engine maintenance. Furthermore, the variety of ZEV models continues to expand, climbing from 105 in Q1 2024 to an impressive 146 by Q1 2025. Among the 124,755 ZEVs sold, a staggering 108,685 were fully electric, showing a nearly 30% surge from the previous quarter.
