Introduction to EV Battery Recycling

Many people often are led to believe that mining for EV batteries has the same environmental impact as drilling for oil. However, this narrative overlooks the remarkable steps being taken in battery recycling. A newly introduced pilot recycling program in China is breaking ground and promising significant advancements in recycling efficiency.

Achieving Unprecedented Recovery Rates

Thanks to a comprehensive regulatory framework comprising 22 national standards, researchers have been able to achieve recovery rates that surpass 99% for critical metals like nickel, cobalt, and manganese. This ambitious initiative is not only enforcing strict guidelines but also uniting various stakeholders across raw material supply, battery production, recycling, dismantling, and chemical processing disciplines.

Standardization: A Game Changer for the Industry

The establishment of clear procedures, highlighted by titles such as “vehicle power battery recycling and dismantling specification” and “vehicle power battery remaining energy detection (standard),” has proven revolutionary. It enables consistent management of retired batteries within the automotive sector, aligning efforts toward sustainability. According to CarNewsChina, companies following these new protocols are experiencing extraordinary recovery rates—99.6% for nickel, cobalt, and manganese, and 96.5% for lithium. These achievements were once thought to be a distant goal for the global industry.
