A New Era in Electric Vehicles

Kia has officially opened its first dedicated production hub for electric vans, and let’s just say, it’s big—really big! The Hwaseong Evo plant, which flaunts a size unrivaled by most production facilities (think 42 soccer fields), aims to launch Kia into the stratospheric heights of the light commercial electric van market by 2030.

The Grand Plans Unraveled

First announced in 2022 as part of Kia’s Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy, this mega-plant is composed of an East and a West section. The East plant spans 98,433 square meters and boasts an annual production capacity of 100,000 units. It’s here that Kia will churn out its very first electric van, the PV5, alongside a bouquet of models like passenger, cargo, and wheelchair-accessible options. Meanwhile, the West portion, which is already in the works, promises to add 150,000 units of Kia’s larger PBVs like the PV7.

Breaking Records and Boundaries

Kia isn’t just aiming for the stars; they’re also celebrating record-breaking feats! Last month, the PV5 cargo variant scooted away with a Guinness World Record for the greatest distance traveled by a light-duty battery-powered electric van with maximum payload. As Kia rolls out these innovative vehicles across markets like South Korea and Europe, we can only anticipate what’s next. Will it be a PBV that flies? Well, it might just be a bit too ambitious, but we’re excited to see!
