Honda’s Strategic Move in EV Production
In a significant move towards enhancing its electric vehicle (EV) production capabilities, Honda has agreed to purchase its co-owned battery plant from LG Energy Solutions in Ohio. This facility, known as the L-H Battery Company, represents a key component in Honda’s ambitious plan for an all-new dedicated EV lineup.

The Ohio EV Hub: A Collaborative Effort
Originally announced in October 2022, Honda and LG’s partnership set the stage for a substantial investment of up to $4.4 billion to establish what is now referred to as the “Honda EV Hub”. While initial production timelines projected a 2025 launch, current expectations have pushed that date to 2026. Nevertheless, production at the facility remains on course, with plans to generate an annual capacity of around 40 GWh.

Details of the Acquisition
According to LG Energy Solutions, the sale is valued at approximately 4.22 trillion won ($2.9 billion), covering the building and related assets (excluding land and equipment). This transactional adjustment aims to enhance operational efficiency, with LG transitioning construction costs over to Honda. Following this sale, both companies will continue to collaboratively operate the EV plant through a leasing arrangement.
Looking ahead, Honda plans to utilize these new batteries to support its upcoming dedicated EV models, starting with the Acura RSX. This purchase and the anticipated production signify Honda’s commitment to leading the charge in the EV market, aiming to stand out with an entirely new platform separate from competitors like GM’s Ultium platform.
