Nissan Cancels Cheaper LEAF Trim — What It Means for Budget EV Buyers

The redesigned 2026 Nissan LEAF was supposed to signal a new chapter for one of America’s original mainstream EVs. With a more crossover-inspired design, longer range, and a built-in NACS port for access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, the updated LEAF looked ready to compete again in the affordable EV space.

At $29,990 for the LEAF S+ (just over $31,000 including destination), it already undercuts much of the market. But Nissan had hinted at something even more aggressive: a lower-priced S trim with a smaller 52 kWh battery and reduced power output. That version was expected to dip well below the $30,000 mark.

Now, Nissan has confirmed the smaller-battery variant won’t arrive for the 2026 model year.

Instead, all 2026 LEAF models will use the larger 75 kWh battery, offering between 259 and 303 miles of range depending on trim. While that keeps the LEAF competitive on range, it removes what could have been a critical entry point for price-sensitive buyers.

Compared with the new Chevrolet Bolt starting under $29,000, and value-focused options like the Hyundai Kona Electric, Nissan now sits in a slightly awkward position. The LEAF offers solid range and familiar practicality, but without that promised ultra-budget trim, it no longer leads the affordability race as clearly as planned.

For consumers, the impact is mixed. On one hand, buyers still get a larger battery and more range across the lineup. On the other, those hoping for a truly sub-$30K EV with shorter range — ideal for urban commuters — will have fewer choices.

My take? Nissan likely prioritized simplicity and margin stability over chasing the lowest possible sticker price. But in today’s EV market, where affordability is everything, stepping back from a budget trim may slow momentum just when the LEAF was regaining relevance.
