For years, Lucid Group has built its reputation on producing some of the most advanced luxury electric vehicles on the market. Models like the Lucid Air and Lucid Gravity showcase cutting-edge efficiency, impressive driving range, and high-end interior design. However, those vehicles also come with premium price tags that limit their appeal to a smaller group of buyers.

Now Lucid appears ready to expand into a much larger market segment. During its recent investor event, the company revealed two upcoming electric SUVs — Cosmos and Earth — both built on Lucid’s new midsize EV platform. Unlike Lucid’s current lineup, these models are expected to start below $50,000, marking the company’s first serious attempt to compete in the more affordable premium EV category.

Although both SUVs share the same underlying architecture, Lucid says they are designed for different types of drivers. The Cosmos is focused on efficiency, interior space, and everyday usability, while the Earth is aimed at buyers who want a more adventure-oriented vehicle.

One of the most interesting aspects of Lucid’s new midsize platform is its focus on efficiency. The company claims the system can achieve up to 4.5 miles per kilowatt-hour, which would place it among the most efficient electric SUVs in the industry. For comparison, many popular midsize EVs currently deliver closer to 3.0–3.5 mi/kWh.

Lucid says the Cosmos will deliver around 300 miles of range from a relatively small 69 kWh battery, highlighting the benefits of improved efficiency. In theory, that allows the vehicle to match the range of competitors using larger battery packs, which helps reduce cost and weight.

Fast charging is another focus. Lucid claims the new SUVs can add more than 200 miles of range in about 14 minutes, which would place them among the faster-charging vehicles in their class. The platform also includes advanced bidirectional charging features, allowing the vehicles to power homes, tools, or other devices through vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-load technology.

In terms of competition, Lucid’s new SUVs will enter a crowded market segment. Rivals include the Tesla Model Y, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the Volkswagen ID.4. These vehicles already dominate the midsize EV market, offering competitive pricing and increasingly advanced technology.

Lucid’s advantage may lie in efficiency and engineering. The company’s new Atlas drive unit, which replaces the previous Zeus motor system, is smaller and simpler with 30% fewer parts and significant cost savings. This could help Lucid maintain its high-performance image while lowering production costs enough to reach a broader audience.

Final perspective: The Cosmos and Earth could represent a turning point for Lucid. If the company successfully delivers its trademark efficiency and luxury driving experience at a price below $50,000, these models could dramatically expand Lucid’s market reach. However, competing against well-established electric SUVs will require not only strong technology but also reliable production, competitive pricing, and a growing charging ecosystem.
