As the global electric vehicle market continues evolving, automakers are increasingly looking beyond traditional passenger cars toward autonomous mobility services. Lucid Group has now offered a glimpse of how it might compete in that space with the unveiling of Lunar, a two-seat robotaxi concept revealed during the company’s Investor Day presentation.

The Lunar concept is built on Lucid’s upcoming midsize EV platform, which is expected to underpin several new vehicles scheduled to arrive later this decade. These include two electric SUVs — Cosmos and Ocean — along with another model that has yet to be revealed. Lucid says this platform will deliver class-leading range, efficiency, interior space, and advanced software capabilities while enabling vehicles priced below $50,000.

While the new SUVs are aimed at mainstream electric vehicle buyers, Lunar represents something different: a vision for autonomous ride-hailing services. The concept is positioned as a potential competitor to vehicles such as the Tesla Cybercab, highlighting Lucid’s ambition to participate in the emerging robotaxi market.

Efficiency is one of the key advantages Lucid emphasizes. Vehicles based on the midsize platform are expected to achieve up to 4.5 miles per kilowatt-hour, making them among the most energy-efficient electric vehicles in their class. For comparison, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 averages around 3.4 mi/kWh, while older electric SUVs like the Jaguar I-PACE typically achieve closer to 2.5 mi/kWh.

Lucid argues that higher efficiency directly translates into lower operating costs — an important factor for autonomous fleets where vehicles may run continuously throughout the day. The company claims its midsize platform could deliver operating costs roughly 34% lower than comparable South Korean EVs and about 10% lower than leading US midsize crossovers.

Charging performance is another highlight. Lucid says vehicles based on this architecture can regain 200 miles of range in roughly 14 minutes, which would make them competitive with some of the fastest-charging EVs currently available.

The robotaxi concept also showcases Lucid’s long-term autonomy strategy. The company plans to gradually introduce more advanced driver assistance capabilities over the next few years, beginning with hands-free highway driving. According to Lucid’s roadmap, hands-free city driving could arrive by 2027, followed by “eyes-off” autonomous capability by the end of 2028 and potentially full Level 4 autonomy by 2029.

Lucid has already taken early steps in this direction through partnerships with Uber and Nuro, with plans to deploy up to 20,000 autonomous vehicles based on the Gravity platform for ride-hailing services.

Final perspective: The Lunar concept signals that Lucid is thinking beyond luxury EVs and into the broader future of mobility. However, the robotaxi market remains highly uncertain, with major players like Tesla, Waymo, and others competing for technological leadership. Whether Lunar eventually reaches production may depend not only on Lucid’s engineering capabilities but also on regulatory progress and the real-world viability of autonomous transportation.
