The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has revealed Hyundai’s 2024 Tucson SUV and refreshed-for-2024 Elantra sedan are the latest recipients of the vaunted Top Safety Pick+, its highest safety accolade.
New cars must withstand more forceful side impact tests and carry qualified headlight hardware, both ranked on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal or poor. To earn Top Safety Pick+, cars must score a good rating in three separate front crash tests and one side impact test, along with an acceptable rating for standard headlights and an available forward collision prevention system categorized as either advanced or superior when tested in both daytime and nighttime environments.
The Elantra nailed a superior rating in both active-safety tests with its standard front crash prevention system and carries good-rated headlight tech through all trims. The larger Tucson claimed a superior grade for the daytime active-safety test and advanced for the nighttime test, with acceptable-rated headlight hardware throughout the trim range.
The 2024 Elantra and Tucson join the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and Palisade as Hyundai’s Top Safety Pick+ offerings from 2023 testing.
