The X4’s rakish roofline lends it a more daring style than the comparatively upright X3, but mechanically, the two are nearly identical. Pricing for the 2024 X3 starts at $47,895; as high fashion tends to command a premium, the X4 opens at $55,995 (all prices include $995 destination charge).

Powertrain Specs and MPG
In their base forms, the X3 and X4 offer an appealing blend of luxury, performance and efficiency, while climbing the powertrain ladder increasingly sacrifices efficiency at the altar of performance. Base models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 248 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque. In the X3, this engine is available either with rear-wheel drive (sDrive30i) or all-wheel drive (xDrive30i); however, BMW only sells the X4 with AWD. All X3 and X4 engines are paired with eight-speed automatic transmissions. The EPA rates the X3 sDrive30i at 23/29/25 mpg city/highway/combined and the X3 xDrive30i at 21/28/24 mpg. Fuel-economy estimates for the X4 are identical to the respective X3 powertrain across the board.

M40i models pack a turbo 3.0-liter inline-six. The 50% increase in displacement is accompanied by a commensurate boost in output, to 382 hp and 369 pounds-feet of torque, and fuel economy drops to 21/26/23 mpg, per the EPA.

Those who want medical-grade lunacy in their luxury compact SUV will find it in the AWD-only X3 M and X4 M. In them, the 3.0-liter six-cylinder is modified to generate 473 hp and 457 pounds-feet of torque; if that’s not enough, the $7,000 M Competition Package stretches output further, to 503 hp and 479 pounds-feet. The EPA doesn’t expect the difference to impact fuel economy, estimating both versions will return 15/20/17 mpg.
Standard and Available Safety Equipment
BMW offers most popular safety features on the X3 and X4, but the standard equipment list is limited to forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitors, automatic high beams, and front and rear parking sensors. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, lane-centering steering, emergency steering assist, a head-up display, 360-degree camera system, automated parking and a dash cam.
